Water Heaters: Tank V. Tankless
Electric Water Heaters
While there used to only be one type of water heater for any household, you now have options; including electric water heaters, otherwise known as tankless water heaters. They're a new innovative development in the industry. Tankless water heaters are smaller, not as large and bulky, which can help with storage and space in your utility and/or storage rooms. You can also avoid issues with burst tanks, and they're more efficient.
Should you get a tank or tankless Water Heater?
When needing a replacement water heater installed, you'll want to decide which is best for you and your family. Tank-style heaters are the more conventional choice, which consist of large cylinders with a tank of hot water for when it's needed -- vs those with no tanks. There are different needs for each household, so which needs are yours?
Tank V Tankless
Tank-style heaters are the traditional option. They consist of large metal cylinders which store the hot water for when it is needed, which then has to be refilled with its supply renewed. They have a large capacity and take up a lot of space.
In most cases nowadays, a tankless water heater is a great option because of the way it can save space, energy costs, and the overall headache. However, cost is the biggest consideration -- because of their new technology, tankless water heaters require more of an upfront investment. It's important to remember that they will last longer and have increased efficiency, but if the investment is not an option, a traditional water heater is still a great option that can do for your home what they always have.
Direct or Indirect-Fired
After deciding between tank or tankless, you'll also want to decide between direct-fire or indirect-fired. Direct means the heater is heated in the tank with a flame, the fuel burning under the water storage tank which is then what heats the water (which means, this is obviously an option for a tank-style heater).
An
indirect-fired heater instead heats the water by transferring it through a heat exchange that's located in the storage tank of the heater. Because the furnace doesn't have to be turned on and off, they can save money and energy. This can be a great way to maintain energy efficiency even if you find yourself in a position where you need a tank-style heater.
