Signs You Need a New Water Heater

Nothing feels better than a hot shower after a hard day. They have an almost magical ability to make every pain, worry, or disappointment disappear. After a hot shower you are a completely new and refreshed person. This is the importance of a water heater. Without this vital appliance this rejuvenating moment will be cut short by your shower giving you a sudden blast of cold water to the face! Here are a few ways you can see if you are in need of a new water heater:

AGE OF WATER HEATER

For a standard gas water heater you can expect it to last 8-12 years. If your water heater is nearing this age or has surpassed it. You should start looking into getting a replacement. If you do not know when your home's water heater was installed you can find the age of your water heater by looking at the model's serial number. The first four numbers typically show what month and year your model was made.

WATER LEAKS

Any water that you see around the base or top of your water heater is a major red flag. These leaks can be caused by a cracked tank, stretched lines, or water corrosion. Replace your water heater to prevent severe damage done by a major leak.

RUSTY OR DISCOLORED WATER

Over time the inner lining of your water tank will start to collect hard water and corrode, causing in sediment build up and rust. As your water heater continues to run that corrosion and sediment build up will start flowing through your pipes causing your water to run a rusty color. While it is possible to flush out the tank to remove some of the corrosion, this issue often signals that the internal components of the heater are deteriorating. When you see your water turn that rusty color it is time to replace your water heater.

 STRANGE NOISES

A water heater that makes popping, banging, gurgling, rumbling or sizzling noises is one that has significant sediment build up. This buildup causes the water heater to overheat causing these mini explosions which is why it is making all the strange noises. This is a strong indication that your water heater needs to be replaced.

WATER IS NOT MAINTAINING TEMPERATURE

A faulty thermostat or a failing heating element are strong causes as to why your water heater is not maintaining its regular temperature. If the issue persists after repairs, then it is definitely time to consider a new one. You don't want to be left without hot water on a regular basis, so if you're struggling to keep that hot water you'll want to contact Wright's Plumbing and Rooter so experienced plumbers and recommend the right water heater for you and get a new one installed.

FOUL ODORS

If your water smells musty, metallic, or like rotten eggs there may be a problem with your water heater. These smells may be caused by bacteria buildup or a failing anode rod. If the smell persists even after you have flushed the tank than a deeper issue is involved and that may need for the whole water heater to be replaced.

HIGHER ENERGY BILL

A sudden increase in your energy bill could be caused by your water heater with a faulty thermometer that causes its temperature to fluctuate. The older a water heater gets the more unreliable it becomes requiring more energy to operate. Upgrading to a newer unit in the long run will help you lower energy costs.
